Just £15,995 For The New Leapmotor T03 EV

The Leapmotor T03 is set to make waves in the UK electric vehicle market when it launches later this year, positioning itself as one of the most affordable EVs available to British consumers. This compact city car from Chinese automaker Leapmotor aims to challenge established players like the Dacia Spring and BYD Seagull in the budget-friendly EV segment.

Design and Dimensions

The T03 is a small, high-riding four-seater that measures just 3.6 meters in length, making it even more compact than the Dacia Spring. Despite its diminutive size, Leapmotor claims the T03 offers cabin space comparable to larger superminis, maximizing interior room for passengers and cargo.

Performance and Range

Powering the T03 is a 95hp electric motor, allowing it to accelerate from 0-62mph in 12.7 seconds. This gives it a performance edge over its main rival, the Dacia Spring, which takes 19.7 seconds in its base 44bhp form or 13.7 seconds with the more powerful 64bhp motor. The T03 is equipped with a 37.3kWh battery pack, larger than the Spring's 26.8kWh unit. This translates to an impressive WLTP-rated range of 165 miles on a single charge, outpacing the Spring by 26 miles. For urban dwellers and short-distance commuters, this range should prove more than adequate for daily use.

Charging Capabilities

When it comes to recharging, the T03 supports DC fast charging at up to 48kW, allowing the battery to go from 30-80% in just 36 minutes. For home charging, it can accept up to 6.6kW on AC power. Expect to wait around 3.5 hours.

Features and Technology

Despite its budget-friendly positioning, the T03 comes well-equipped with modern features. A 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system takes centre stage in the cabin, controlling most secondary functions including climate and media. This stands in contrast to the entry-level Dacia Spring, which lacks a central display. The T03 also boasts an array of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and blindspot detection. Additionally, the car's software can be updated over-the-air, allowing Leapmotor to add new features and functionality to existing vehicles over time.

Production and Distribution

Interestingly, T03 models destined for the UK market will be built in Europe rather than imported from China. It's expected that production will take place at the same Stellantis plant in Poland where vehicles like the Jeep Avenger and Fiat 600 are manufactured. This European production should help alleviate any concerns about build quality or supply chain issues.

Stellantis Partnership

Leapmotor's entry into the UK market is facilitated by its partnership with Stellantis, the automotive giant that owns brands like Vauxhall, Citroën, and Fiat. This collaboration gives Leapmotor access to Stellantis' extensive dealership network and after-sales support, which should help build consumer confidence in the new brand.

Outlook and Impact

The arrival of the Leapmotor T03 in the UK market could significantly shake up the affordable EV segment. Its combination of competitive pricing, decent range, and modern features makes it an attractive option for urban drivers looking to go electric without breaking the bank. Moreover, the T03's European production and Stellantis backing may give it an edge over other Chinese budget
EVs entering the market.

As the UK continues its push towards electrification, vehicles like the T03 play a crucial role in making EVs accessible to a broader range of consumers. If Leapmotor can deliver on its promises of value and quality, the T03 could become a common sight on British roads, helping to accelerate the country's transition to electric mobility.

Ordering will be available from late November and first deliveries will come before the end of the year.
