The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N – Long Live The Hot Hatch

In the ever-evolving world of cars, Hyundai has thrown down the gauntlet with its latest offering, the Ioniq 5 N. This isn't just another electric vehicle; it's a game-changer that's set to redefine our expectations of what an EV can be.

At first glance, the Ioniq 5 N cuts an imposing figure. Its muscular stance, 21-inch forged aluminium wheels, and distinctive N-series Soultronic Orange paint job leave no doubt about its sporting intentions. The 50mm wider body, prominent wing-type N spoiler, and aggressive front fascia with additional cooling vents all serve to enhance both its visual appeal and aerodynamic efficiency.

But it's what lies beneath that truly sets this car apart. Hyundai has equipped the Ioniq 5 N with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain that produces a whopping 609 horsepower in normal conditions. Engage the N Grin Boost feature, and that figure jumps to an eye-watering 650 horsepower for up to 10 seconds.

This translates to a 0-60 mph time of just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 161 mph – numbers that put many petrol-powered supercars to shame. Do we really need cars this fast I asked myself on a number of occasions whilst whizzing through The Dales?

But raw power is only part of the story. Hyundai has gone to great lengths to ensure the Ioniq 5 N delivers a driving experience that's as engaging as it is rapid. The N e-shift system simulates gear changes, complete with a dual-clutch transmission-like kick, while the N Active Sound+ provides a choice of three synthesised engine notes. I had thought this would be a bit of a gimmick, but no, it does add to the driving experience if you are in the mood.

It's a clever bit of tech that adds a layer of involvement often missing from electric vehicles. The chassis has been thoroughly reworked to handle all this performance. The suspension is fully adjustable, allowing drivers to fine-tune the ride for track days or more comfortable cruising. The N-tuned braking system, featuring 400mm ventilated front discs, is Hyundai's most powerful yet, providing confident stopping power even under hard use.

Inside, the Ioniq 5 N continues to impress. The cabin is a masterclass in functional design, with supportive bucket seats that hold you firmly in place during spirited driving. The driver-focused cockpit features a configurable digital instrument cluster and a large infotainment screen, both of which offer a wealth of performance data and customisation options.

But perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the Ioniq 5 N is its duality of character. Despite its performance credentials, it remains a practical family car. The spacious interior offers generous rear legroom, while the boot is more than capacious enough for everyday use. At the touch of a button, this track-ready monster can transform into a silent, comfortable cruiser.

Of course, this level of performance doesn't come without compromise. The official WLTP range is 278 miles but expect significantly less if you're exploring the car's performance potential, or its very cold as it was during the test period. However, with a 240kW maximum charging speed, you can charge up to 80% in as little as 18 minutes.

In terms of pricing, the Ioniq 5 N costs a hefty £65,000, positioning it as a premium offering in the EV market. But considering the level of performance and technology on offer, it represents good value when compared to similarly potent petrol-powered alternatives.

In conclusion, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a tour de force of engineering that successfully bridges the gap between the electric future and the petrol-powered past. It offers supercar-rivalling performance, engaging driving dynamics, and everyday practicality in one stylish package.

For those who have been waiting for an electric car that can truly set the pulse racing, the wait is over. The Ioniq 5 N isn't just a great electric car – it's a great car, full stop. As we move towards an electric future, it's reassuring to know that the thrill of driving won't be left behind. The Ioniq 5 N proves that the future of motoring can be just as exciting as its past. It's a car that doesn't just meet expectations – it shatters them, setting a new benchmark for what an electric performance car can be. Hyundai has thrown down the gauntlet, and it's now up to the rest of the industry to respond. And no doubt they will.
