Blackpool Tower's Former Boy Wonder Brings Theatre Organ Magic To Saltaire
One of Britain's best-loved theatre organists is coming to Saltaire this May for what promises to be a gloriously entertaining Sunday afternoon.
Nicholas Martin BEM began his remarkable career at the age of seventeen, when he became one of the youngest resident organists ever to play the famous Wurlitzer at Blackpool Tower Ballroom — a milestone reached in 1981, just a few years after a childhood visit to Blackpool had first introduced him to the instrument. It was there that he heard the legendary Reginald Dixon at the console, and his course was set.
Two years later he moved to Turner's Musical Merry-Go-Round in Northampton, where he spent more than two decades at the keyboard of the former Paramount Newcastle Wurlitzer, building a devoted following and recording a popular series of albums. He has also been a familiar presence on BBC Radio 2's long-running programme
The Organist Entertains.
Away from the concert platform, Nicholas and his wife Marianne founded the charity Miracles to Believe In in 2001, supporting children and families affected by autism. It was in recognition of this work that he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen's New Year Honours of 2014.
The concert takes place at Victoria Hall, Saltaire, on Sunday 10th May at 2.30pm. Refreshments will be available, and under-stage tours offering a rare glimpse of the organ's pipes and percussion are also on offer. Level access is available from Lockwood Street.
