The grey and damp of last Sunday morning was enlivened by the colours and sounds of an eclectic selection of classic and sports cars that congregated in Prince’s Square, Harrogate.

They had gathered for the latest edition of Classic Car Sunday, a ‘cars and coffee’ style breakfast meet up for like-minded car enthusiasts. Around 60 cars and several hundred spectators came from across Yorkshire, filling Prince’s Square and the surrounding streets.

Every type of car is welcome. On Sunday, an extensive array of Porsches was on display alongside assorted BMWs, a few Ferraris, a strong contingent of American cars, and a couple of Morgans. It wasn’t just high-end sports cars in attendance, either. An immaculate, 32-year-old Volkswagen Polo attracted a lot of attention, as did an extremely rare Excalibur, a vintage Mercedes look-a-like.

Classic Car Sunday is organised by Harrogate resident James, who is custodian of a classic MG and Alfa Romeo. He got the idea from a friend who had been to similar events in Australia.

“I thought, why can’t we do that here in sunny Harrogate,” he said.
“We started last winter and quickly had to find a bigger spot. Prince’s Square is ideal, especially as all the local coffee shops open for us. We just have a couple of hours of cars, coffee and good conversation,” he added.

The meets are promoted on Instagram, where the Classic Car Sunday account has built up nearly 3000 followers.

James said: “Sunday was another great turnout, a really good mixture of old and new cars. What I love about doing these events is seeing people chatting, walking around the cars and enjoying a few hours with fellow enthusiasts.”

James plans on continuing holding Classic Car Sunday every month. “I’d love to have my own location,” he said. “Though we have plans to go to different places, kind of CCS on tour.”
