Yorkshire And Lancashire To Make History In Manchester With Mixed Ability Rugby Match
History will be made at Sedley Park this weekend as the first counties' mixed-ability rugby match will take place in Manchester between Yorkshire and Lancashire.
The match is another step forward for inclusivity and diversity within rugby with the organisers of the event hoping it will widen ‘the scope for growth in community rugby and grassroot clubs’.
On the fixture, which she has spearheaded, the inclusivity and diversity lead for Lancashire Catherine Jones said: “I think it’s really important to give everyone the same opportunities in sport. I want to show the true meaning and values of rugby, of teamwork, respect and enjoyment. That is seen every time these players take to the field.”
“Hopefully this is the start of showcasing mixed-ability rugby to wider audiences, and the sport can grow year to year."
Mixed-ability rugby allows players, who may or may not have barriers to the traditional game, to come together and play a regular game.
Anyone who wishes to play full-contact rugby is able to play this sport, with the sport being moved forward by International Mixed Ability Sports (IMAS) out of Bradford.
The game between Yorkshire and Lancashire will kick off at 1.30pm on Sunday (19th April) at Sedley Park and promises to be an 'exciting showdown between the Northern counties’.
